The Minifigure was not the first LEGO figure. In 1974, the LEGO Family was introduced to enable role play and thereby populate the worlds that children could build. They were constructed from a combination of classic bricks and figure parts. The LEGO Family was the first line of figures introduced, including dad, mom, grandmother, daughter and son.
